2021 Graduate Assistant Job Descriptions

Northwestern Athletics & Recreation is seeking qualified candidates for two graduate assistant positions (descriptions below). Live Events/Fan Experience Graduate Assistant
 
The Graduate Assistant for Live Events/Fan Experience reports to the Senior Executive Director of Broadcast Operations. This position will assist in the preparation and execution of live events and in-venue video board shows across 19 varsity sports, and work with the marketing and sponsorship departments to create an outstanding experience for fans across all Northwestern events and venues.
 
The Graduate Assistant position is a 22-month appointment and acceptance to Northwestern's Master's in Sports Administration program through the University's School of Professional Studies is required. The Graduate Assistant must enroll in at least one course per quarter, including summer quarter. A tuition waiver is provided and will cover up to six courses per year.  A monthly stipend is provided. This position does not provide benefits.
 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  1. Develop and execute all areas of the in-venue experience for assigned events, including producing run of show and public address scripts; coordination of entertainment, DJ, and music; and creation and loading of video board content and graphics.
  2. Collaborate with marketing and sponsorship departments on the fan experience, including developing and executing fan promotions and activities.
  3. Work assigned game days across all sports, including football and men's and women's basketball. Assigned roles will include work with the marketing department and/or in the video board control room.
  4. Assist with the development and creation of video vignettes with Northwestern coaches and student-athletes for use on stadium video boards. 
  5. Other duties as assigned. 
Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, video production or related field, and admittance to the Northwestern Masters of Sport Administration program.
  2. Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, After Effects).
  3. Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
  4. Ability to multitask and manage several projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  5. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  6. Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.

Communications/Sports Information Graduate Assistant
 
The Graduate Assistant for Athletic Communications reports to the Associate A.D. for Athletic Communications, and assists in communications and public relations efforts for assigned varsity programs, including press releases, media relations, website management, content creation and distribution, and event management.
 
The Graduate Assistant position is a 22-month appointment and acceptance to Northwestern's Master's in Sports Administration program through the University's School of Professional Studies is required. The Graduate Assistant must enroll in at least one course per quarter, including summer quarter. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  1. Primary communication contact for assigned sports, including assistance with football and men's basketball under the direction of primary sport contacts.
  2. Coordinate all media relations, event staffing and social media for primary sport assignments.
  3. Preparation and dissemination of press releases, statistical information and digital content.
  4. Update athletics department website in a timely and appropriate manner.
  5. Direct efficient gameday media operations for assigned sports.
  6. Assist in the recruitment and management of undergraduate student staff.
  7. Maintain historical and photo records for assigned teams.
  8. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree required, preferably in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or related field.
  2. Previous experience with an intercollegiate or professional sports communications department is preferred.
  3. Excellent writing, editing and verbal skills.
  4. Proficient in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  5. Familiarity with website (Sidearm) editing systems.
  6. Photo and video experience is a plus.
  7. Working knowledge of StatCrew or Genius software.
  8. Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.
