Three Wildcats Earn All-Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. β Three Northwestern field hockey playersΒ earned All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced on Wednesday.Β
Junior Bente Baekers and sophomore Maddie Zimmer were named First Team All-Big Ten, while senior Kayla Blas received second team honors. It is the second consecutive year that all three Wildcats have earned conference accolades.
Bente Baekers has now earned conference honors in every season as a Wildcat, receiving Big Ten Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten nods in 2019, and a second team award last season. The Netherlands native led the Big Ten with 43 points, while finishing second with 17 goals and tied for third with 9 assists. She was the only player in the conference to tally 10+ goals and 8+ assists.
2020 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Maddie Zimmer earns her second-consecutive First Team All-Big Ten honors. Zimmer tallied seven goals and three assists on the season, becoming the first Wildcat to earn first team honors in her first two seasons since Chelsea Armstrong in 2009-10.Β
Senior Kayla Blas receives her third-consecutive All-Big Ten honors, after earning a first team nod last season and second team in 2019. Blas tied for third on the Big Ten leaderboard with nine assists, matching a career-high, while anchoring the Wildcat defense.
Sophomore Maggie Powers earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition.
After finishing the season on a five-game winning streak, Northwestern now heads to Piscataway, N.J. for the Big Ten Tournament. The fight-seeded Wildcats (14-4, 5-3 B1G) match up against fourth-seeded Michigan (13-3, 5-3 B1G) in the first round this Thursday at 10 a.m. CT.
