McCardell's Top-5 Finish Powers NU at B1Gs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. — Rachel McCardell added another chapter to her impressive junior season, securing All-Big Ten honors with a fifth-place finish at the 2021 Big Ten Cross Country Championships. McCardell's finish was the second-best finish by a Wildcat at the conference championship meet in program history.
As a team Northwestern placed seventh overall with 180 points, just eight points behind No. 25 Illinois in sixth. It was Northwestern's best finish at Big Tens since 2018 and the highest Northwestern has placed at the Conference championship race in the Jill Miller era. The Wildcats jumped up six spots from the Conference's last full-field championship meet in 2019 when NU placed 13th. NU took home a seventh-place finish at the pandemic-altered 2020 Big Ten Championship meet, which did not consist of a full field.
Ranked fifth in the Midwest in the latest NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Regional Rankings, Northwestern was one of just six schools in the conference to place multiple runners among the top-25 finishers in University Park.
In the 123-runner field, McCardell was joined by Lotte Van der Pol in the top 25, as the Dutch graduate student continued to impress in her first season at Northwestern. Junior Kalea Bartolotto was the next highest Wildcat with a 48th-place finish to help Northwestern secure a seventh-place team finish.
The All-Big Ten nod is the latest accomplishment for McCardell in a historic junior season. She previously earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors after winning the Redbird Invitational at Illinois State earlier this season.
