State College, PA - Northwestern Women's Cross Country delivered a strong performance against a stacked field of runners at the Penn State National Open, posting a top-three team finish with Lotte van der Pol, Kalea Bartolotto and Rachel McCardell crossing the finish line among the top-ten individuals in State College.

In their final race before the Big Ten Championship back in State College later this month, the Wildcats held their own against some of the top schools in the nation. The No. 7 ranked team in the Midwest in this month's NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Regional Rankings, Northwestern finished among the top three schools in Pennsylvania, alongside Michigan, the No. 8 team in the country, and a Georgia Tech team that received votes in the latest national poll.

The 'Cats impresssed thanks to some familiar faces, including another strong run from McCardell, who was voted the Big Ten Athlete of the Week earlier this season after her victory at the Redbird Invitiational. The junior finished tenth in 21:16 among a field of nearly 200 runners.

Bartolotto continued her strong junior season with 21:12 run at the National Open, good for a seventh-place finish in State College.

Pacing the 'Cats in their final meet of the regular season, van der Pol delivered a career performance after joining Northwestern last spring from the Netherlands. The graduate student finished third in 21:10 to cap off a huge race for the Wildcats.

Northwestern will return to the course in State College later this month for the 2021 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on October 29.
