Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home or away basketball game.
At the Wildcats' home game against the Rutgers, the athletic department features Girls Play Sports (GPS), an organization founded in Evanston that seeks to foster leadership skills and confidence in girls through participation in a wide variety of sports. The program engages girls, grades 3-8, in multiple sports and meaningful conversations about current topics that affect young women today.
Northwestern student-athletes have interacted with youth from GPS through after school programs that introduce girls to a wide variety of sports and help them understand the benefits of playing more than one sport. Staff members have also supported Girls Play Sports programming by leading important discussions related to health and wellness.
In addition to assisting with after school programs and health related discussions, the athletic department and GPS collaborate through events held throughout the year. For example, NU representatives attended GPS's annual Trunk or Treat event, which brings groups together throughout the Evanston community to celebrate Halloween. Additionally, youth from GPS have participated in National Girls and Women In Sports Day, an annual event hosted by the athletic department that recognizes the positive influence sports have played in the lives of young girls and women while it also celebrates the advancement of females in the athletic sphere.
