Community Group of the Game Spotlight: Evanston/Skokie School District 65

Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home or away basketball game.
At the Wildcats' away game against Penn State, the athletic department features Evanston/Skokie School District 65 (D65), a school district headquartered in Evanston that serves elementary, middle and K-8 schools.
There are several ways in which Northwestern student-athletes interact with youth within District 65. During pre-COVID times, every Friday afternoon student-athletes would visit Orrington Elementary School to play games with students during P.E. class. In lieu of in-person visits, student-athletes have found a new way to remain close with students, which has been through videos that offer pieces of advice related to the importance of staying healthy through physical activity and proper nutrition.
Additionally, a handful of student-athletes are involved with Books and Breakfast, a program that provides homework help to youth in grades K-5 in District 65. Every week student-athlete tutors' login to zoom and utilize creative means to make sure children can begin each school day (remote or in-person) physically, emotionally and mentally prepared.
As one further example, a proud tradition in the athletic department is hosting the annual 'Kits, 'Cats and Kids Block Party in conjunction with the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and a few other City partners. Every summer, residents in Evanston are invited to downtown Evanston to enjoy games, arts and crafts, family-friendly activities, music, the Evanston Township High School and NU marching bands, and great dining options. Traditionally held in September, this event celebrates the beginning of a new academic year.
