Northwestern Holds Virtual Staff Community Outreach Week

Every year, Northwestern University Department of Athletics & Recreation participate in Community Outreach Day, a one-day event that traditionally has been devoted to giving back to the Evanston community. Due to the current health crisis and visitor restrictions, staff members were unable to volunteer as a group like they have in previous years.
Despite limitations in place, the department came together remotely to support a proud tradition of community service. This was achieved through three virtual initiatives that took place the week of Monday, July 20 through Sunday, July 26.
Sponsored by Northwestern Medicine, the week long event began with a Zoom discussion with Northwestern's Department of Political Science professor, Dr. Alvin Tillery. Tillery's research in American politics focuses on American political development, racial and ethnic politics and media and politics. Nearly 200 staff members engaged in important topics with Dr. Tillery surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Another component of Community Outreach Week focused on showing gratitude to medical personnel at Northwestern Medicine for their relentless work and selfless sacrifice on the front lines fighting COVID-19. Staff members submitted over 50 heartfelt videos and thoughtful thank you cards to express their appreciation.
Lastly, in an effort to support local schools and organizations in Evanston, staff members donated school supplies, technology devices, and over 350 pounds of clothing items to benefit Connections for the Homeless and middle schools within District 65.
While the event took on a different look this year, the Northwestern University Department of Athletics & Recreation remains committed to learning, serving, and supporting its community.
Sacrifice. Selfless. Superheroes.
