5/27/2020 10:38:00 AM | General, Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Cross Country & Track

EVANSTON, IL – Northwestern's Sarah Nicholson of the cross country team and Jack Thorne of the men's swimming and diving team have been recognized by the Big Ten as Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2019-20 academic year. The pair was chosen from a group of more than 350 exemplary student-athletes who displayed positive sportsmanship throughout the year.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Nicholson placed in the top-25 twice this season and holds the sixth fastest time in program history in the 5000m. The Wildwood, Missouri native was also a top-60 finisher at the 2019-20 NCAA XC Regional Championship and a three time Academic All-Big Ten Honoree.

Throne was named a captain of the 2019-20 men's swimming and diving team. In his senior season, the Colorado native played an integral role in the highest Big Ten finish for the men's program since 2007, scoring a program high 665 points. He is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
