PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Northwestern concluded day one of the Big Ten Championships with Sebastian Rivera and Ryan Deakin each earning a spot in tomorrow evening's finals.
Deakin and Rivera were also two of five total Wildcat wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two weeks at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. Also punching their tickets to NCAA's were Michael DeAugustino, Shayne Oster, and Lucas Davison.
Wrestling just an hour away from his hometown of Jackson, New Jersey, Rivera stole the evening with a dramatic, 7-6 upset over No. 1 Seth Gross (Wisconsin) after recording a takedown in the final minute. Rivera will face off in the finals at the 133 lb division tomorrow evening, taking on No. 2 seed Roman Bravo-Young (Penn State). This marks the second-straight year in which Rivera has made the finals of the Big Ten Championship, having also advanced last year at 125 lbs when he defeated Spencer Lee of Iowa.
Contrary to Rivera's match, Deakin provided very little drama as he secured a berth in the 157 lb finals for the first time in his career. The Broomfield, Colo. native recorded three takedowns in the first four minutes of action against No. 4 seed Will Lewan (MICH), never trailing en route to an 8-2 decision. Deakin will face off against No. 3 seed Kendall Coleman (Purdue) in the finals, who he defeated by a 14-0 major decision earlier this season.
After each recording two wins in session one, DeAugustino, Oster and Davison all fell to higher-ranked opponents in the semis. All three Wildcats will compete tomorrow morning during the wrestlebacks in Session III.
Action continues Sunday morning, with consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches getting underway during Session III, while the first, third and fifth-place matches headline Session IV. Session III will be streamed live on BTN+, while the championship rounds will be televised live on BTN and the FOX Sports app.
