PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Northwestern wrestling returns this weekend when the Wildcats travel to Rutgers University to compete in the 2020 Big Ten Championships.
The 'Cats enter the tournament on a high note after completing dual season with a decisive 38-9 defeat of SIU-Edwardsville on Feb. 23. The matchup marked a season high in points for Northwestern, topping the previous weekend's victory over Maryland by one point.
The strong finish secured top-six seeding for five Northwestern wrestlers this weekend. The team as a whole comes in at eighth overall in the latest FloWrestling tournament rankings.
Headlining for the 'Cats is #1 Ryan Deakin, who finished dual season with a perfect 18-0 record to secure the No. 1 seed at 157 pounds. His undefeated campaign included five pins and seven major decisions, both team-leading figures. Deakin enters the tournament 9-0 in Big Ten competition and 7-0 when facing ranked opponents. He'll look to best his fifth-place finish at last year's Big Ten Championships.
Also finishing strong was #10 Lucas Davison, who will wrestle as the No. 5 seed at 197 pounds. His victory by fall against SIU-E secured a 14-6 record on the year. Davison went 7-2 against Big Ten opponents in regular-season matchups and 3-3 against other ranked wrestlers. The redshirt first-year will be competing in his first Big Ten Championships.
#12 Michael DeAugustino will also be making his Big Ten Championship debut this weekend after an impressive 17-7 rookie season. He locked up the No. 6 seed for the tournament at 125 pounds after gaining a victory by technical fall in his final bout of the season. The redshirt first-year has impressed in tournament competition this season, placing second in the Midlands Championships and third in the CKLV Invitational.
New Jersey-native #3 Sebastian Rivera returns to his home state looking to earn his second-straight Big Ten title, this time at 133 lbs. He went 9-2 on the season and won his only Big Ten matchup, a victory by fall against Maryland. Rivera received a No. 5 seed for this weekend in a highly-competitive weight class.
Senior #12 Shayne Oster will compete in his fourth and final Big Ten Championship as the No. 6 seed at 165 pounds. He went 17-8 on the season and 8-1 in Big Ten matchups, racking up five major decisions to tie with Rivera for second-most on the team behind Deakin. He placed seventh in the Big Ten Championship his first-year season and eighth his junior season, both wrestling at 149.
The tournament kickoffs Saturday, March 7th with Session I at 8 a.m. CT and Session II at 4:30 p.m. CT. The tournament will continue at 10 a.m. CT with Session III, and concluding with the championship round at 2:30 p.m. CT.
All matches will be available via the BTN+ streaming service, with the championship round airing live on the Big Ten Network.
