Northwestern Drops Game Two to Omaha

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Northwestern fell to Nebraska-Omaha 9-2 in game two of the weekend series at Camelback Ranch.
The Wildcats got a solid performance from Junior RHP Quinn Lavelle in his first start of the season. He held the Mavericks scoreless for the first four innings while allowing only three hits and no walks.
Meanwhile, it was a series of missed opportunities for the 'Cats' offense, as they failed to capitalize on a shaky start from Omaha starter Spencer Koelewyn. Northwestern stranded a total of seven runners over the first three innings before a Michael Trautwein double to left scored Shawn Goosenberg from first to put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the fourth.
The Mavericks quickly struck back in the top of the next inning, taking advantage of four Northwestern errors to score six runs on three hits. Lavelle was finally able to close out the inning, securing his final pitching line at five innings with two earned runs.
Northwestern's relievers took over from there, shutting down the Mavericks for the sixth and seventh innings. First-years Jack Sauser and Coby Moe threw a scoreless inning a piece in their respective collegiate debuts. The right-handers allowed only one hit each while putting away a combined six batters via strikeout.
The Mavericks added another three runs in the eighth, extending their lead to 9-1. Northwestern tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning after a walk and two hit batters loaded the bases, but they fell short after scoring only one run.
The Wildcats look to bounce back in tomorrow's series finale at Camelback Ranch. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, with Tyler Uberstine set to make his first career start for the Wildcats.
