Community Group of the Game Spotlight: Curt's Cafe
12/23/2020 8:14:00 AM | 'Cats Give Back
Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home or away basketball game.
As we head into the Northwestern men's basketball game against Iowa, the athletic department recognizes Curt's Café, a shop based in Evanston known for both its homemade treats and training program for young adults who have come in contact with the judicial system, dropped out of school, or who are homeless. When these young adults join the program, Curt's teaches them culinary skills and other marketable skills to ultimately help them land a job. Since the café opened in 2012, only 3% of students have returned to prison, which is a testament to the work and life skills that students acquire through the program.
This past year a group of students from Curt's Café visited Northwestern to meet the Wildcats men's basketball team. During the visit, the group toured Welsh-Ryan Arena and the newly-renovated Trienens Performance Center. Following the tour of facilities, Head Coach Chris Collins spoke about three keys to success, which include resiliency, positivity and discipline. Immediately following the presentation, students had the opportunity to shoot baskets with members on the team.
