Community Group of the Game Spotlight: Misericordia
12/1/2020 3:29:00 PM | 'Cats Give Back
Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home football game.
In this week's spotlight, the athletic department recognizes Misericordia, an organization based in Chicago that offers a community of care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Misericordia serves more than 600 children and adults residentially.
For several years, student-athletes have teamed up with Misericordia by supporting its annual Candy Days. Every year student-athletes distribute bags of jelly beans to pedestrians and drivers in exchange for donations. All proceeds from the event go directly toward services and programming that positively affect residents.
In addition to assisting with Candy Days, a handful of student-athletes on the men's basketball team recently joined residents on zoom for a "meet and greet". During the engagement, residents were given the opportunity to ask student-athletes questions about the 2020-21 schedule, their pre-game routines, goals and favorite memories from competing, to name a few.
The athletic department has also hosted residents from Misericordia at both home football and basketball games, as part of the Community Group of the Game initiative. Under normal circumstances, this initiative helps organizations in the community receive an exclusive game-day experience by providing groups with admission to the game, a meal voucher and airtime on the jumbotron as the featured group of the game.
