Lofty Expectations for Wildcats in Big Ten ESPN Roundtable

11/5/2020 3:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats were picked by at least one writer to repeat as Big Ten Champions in ESPN's 2020-21 predictions for the Big Ten, released on Wednesday.

In addition, two of three writers on the roundtable picked senior Lindsey Pulliam to win 2020-21 Big Ten Player of the Year. The full article can be found here.

Both Mechelle Voepel and Charlie Creme selected Pulliam to win player of the year. Graham Hays picked Northwestern to finish first in the Big Ten, while Voepel and Creme slotted the Wildcats third.

Here is an excerpt on the Wildcats, in response to the the cancellation of last year's NCAA Tournament, where the Wildcats were projected to host the first two rounds in Evanston:

It's a close call because everything came together for Northwestern a season ago, and it won't be easy to simply swap out Abi Scheid's 3-point shooting and Abbie Wolf's interior presence for a team that didn't have a surplus of either asset.

Northwestern was headed for its second NCAA tournament appearance this century and had legitimate Sweet 16 aspirations. We see programs crescendo like that and then struggle to remain at that level (although it might be worth noting that Northwestern coach Joe McKeown managed it with George Washington teams that made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2007 and 2008).

In this case, circumstances work in Northwestern's favor...

The Big Ten will release its preseason honors on Wednesday. Nov. 11. The NCAA has approved a start date for college basketball on Nov. 25, with the Wildcats' schedule coming soon.
