Q and A: Jordan Hamilton

Get to know our returning Wildcats! NUSports.com sat down with senior guard Jordan Hamilton for a Q and A.

Question:
What do you think you were best at last season? What would you like to improve on this season?
Jordan Hamilton: I was a little inconsistent last year, but the best thing that I brought to the table was clutch moments. Down the stretch, when our offense wasn't doing well, I felt like I was able to give that defensive component. In clutch situations we heavily depended on Veronica, Lindsey, Scheid, Wolf and Sydney but anytime where something was needed I feel like I delivered. Coming in when I'm needed and giving that clutch play was my thing last year. But I want to work on my consistency and make sure that the other team feels me on the court. I've been really working on my shot and making it more consistent, it feels more fluid and correct. To just be an offensive force on the floor is what I want to bring this year.

Q: What was your favorite moment on the court last year?
JH: Nebraska was probably my most favorite game because I was able to pull off those two threes. It wasn't the most common line up, we were kinda small in that series. But sealing the deal by getting steal, then taking a charge and Lindsey hitting that clutch shot. It was the most surreal thing, it felt like I was watching a movie or something.

Q: How has the pandemic affected your life and how you play?
JH: It has made me value every day. At the beginning, people didn't really know who the virus affected and how it affected them; if it was just young people or old people. It just makes me think about every day one second and one minute at a time. When it comes to playing, I always think about the seniors last year who weren't able to play in the NCAA tournament. It just makes me take every day and cherish it.

Q: What drives you to do what you do everyday?
JH: Definitely my teammates, they're my sisters. Having them on the floor and seeing them next to me putting in so much effort makes me want to sacrifice myself and give it my all. So we can make sure we're where we want to be and go even further this coming year. My sisters fuel me to be my best self.

Q: Do you think your team camaraderie benefits the team on the court?
JH: Most definitely. If you don't have chemistry you're not able to feed off that person or read what they might do, what their tendencies are. Being able to connect not just on the court but off the court, it allows us to have that something extra that most teams probably don't have.

Q: What was your favorite moment off the court with your teammates last year?
JH: We were in Wisconsin, we were in the hotel room and Sydney Wood conducted a talent show, karaoke, comedy show. Our athletic trainer, our strength conditioning coach and our video person were the judges. There were about eight performances: Abi Scheid was singing, Kaylah Rainey was singing, Abbie Wolf did a comedy thing and I had to do slam poetry. It was so fun being able to connect like that. We genuinely love hanging out with each other, you don't have to force us to hang out, we just naturally gravitate towards each other.

Q: Do you have a passion for slam poetry?
JH: I'm just kind of goofy I guess. Every time we're foam rolling before we eat on the road they'll yell at me, "Jordan, do slam poetry! Do slam poetry!" Little, stupid rhymes just kind of come to my mind and they like it, so I do it for them.

Q: Lindsey mentioned that you guys play games together a lot, what game is your favorite?
JH: Well me, Lindsey and Lauryn are roommates. We play Phase 10 a lot and it gets very, very heated because it's a long game. One time we were playing one game for literally three and a half hours. When I lost I was so mad, I threw my cards and Lindsey kept teasing me, saying"are you mad?" Lauryn was sulking a little bit. But yeah, Phase 10 is the new it game.

Q: The freshman said you were the funniest on the team, Lindsey said that was questionable. Can you weigh in on the controversy?
JH: I don't want to toot my own horn but I think if you're able to crack yourself up, genuinely, you're pretty funny. I laugh a lot at my jokes and I've had a lot of people tell me I'm funny, so I agree with the first-years. I think they have a great sense of humor and to me, it sounds like the rest of the team is a little salty and jealous and a bunch of haters.
