One For The Books: Softball Student-Athletes Team Up With Books and Breakfast

10/28/2020 1:24:00 PM | 'Cats Give Back

The 'Cats Give Back program seeks to enhance the overall educational experience of student-athletes by connecting Wildcats to service-oriented and philanthropic activities in the Evanston and Chicagoland communities. The program is supported by Northwestern Medicine and their commitment to creating better communities, now and into the future.

Throughout the month of October, a handful of student-athletes on the softball team began volunteering with Books and Breakfast, a program that provides homework help to youth in grades K-5 within the Evanston School District 65.

Every week student-athlete tutors' login to zoom and utilize creative means to provide academic, social and emotional support.

Senior Maegan Hollins is one of several softball players who serve as a tutor at Books and Breakfast. "Being able to uplift and encourage students, especially Black and POC students, at such an early age is so important. Books and Breakfast not only allows them to go to class and learn with confidence, but also encourages them to set any goal for themselves outside the classroom," said Hollins.

The mission of Books and Breakfast is to provide students with the appropriate support needed in order for each child to feel valued and reach his or her full potential. Last year, the organization provided 3,894 hours of tutoring and served 8,587 breakfasts to youth.

As part of this year's 'Cats Give Back programming, one community outreach activity will be featured every month through the 12 Months of Giving Initiative.
