Community Group of the Game Spotlight: Evanston Special Recreation

Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home or away football game.

In this week's spotlight, the athletic department recognizes Special Recreation, a division within the Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department that seeks to improve the quality of life and promote a successful leisure lifestyle for individuals with disabilities. This is achieved through a variety of initiatives including after-school programs, trips, outings, special events, summer camps and Special Olympics.

The department works closely with the organization through volunteerism. As an example, this past January a handful of student-athletes on the women's swimming and diving team led a practice for Special Recreation swimmers. The student-athlete led practice focused on building proper technique for all four strokes. The following month, the entire men's swimming and diving team assisted Special Recreation in hosting a swim meet at Northwestern University's Norris Aquatics Center. The men's team helped ensure the meet ran smoothly by overseeing the score table, serving as a timer and competing as a pacer.
