EVANSTON, Ill. – Charlie Tilson has joined the Northwestern baseball coaching staff as an assistant coach, head coach Spencer Allen announced this week.

A native of nearby Wilmette, Ill., Tilson arrives to Evanston after multiple stints with a handful of MLB organizations. He most recently was with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a minor league deal and spent time with the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals as well.

"We are truly thrilled to have Charlie Tilson join our coaching staff here at Northwestern," said Allen. "His career speaks for itself, playing nine years professionally and four of those years in the big leagues. What truly makes Charlie special is his humility and eagerness to learn. He is going to be a superstar in the coaching world, and we are so glad he could join the Wildcat Baseball program!"

Tilson was originally selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft after forgoing his offer to play collegiately at the University of Illinois. Five years later, he played with Triple-A Memphis for 100 games, producing a .282/.345/.407 slash line with four home runs, 34 RBI's, 53 runs and 15 stolen bases.

Halfway through the 2016 season, Tilson was traded from the Cardinals to the White Sox. Just two days after joining the organization, he made his professional debut and recorded his first major league hit. Tilson would go on to spend three seasons with the Sox.

This will be Tilson's first stint on the coaching side of the game. As a player, he worked with some of the most progressive minds in professional baseball such as White Sox General Manager Rick Hahn. He joins a coaching staff with close to a combined three decades worth of experience.
