Evanston, IL- For the second week in a row first-year swimmers Frederico Burdisso and Hannah Brunzell have earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the former also scoring the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award, the conference announced Wednesday.
This marks Burdisso's second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award and the first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week in his young Northwestern career. It is the first time that a male swimmer has taken both honors in the same week since Ohio State's Ruslan Gaziev did it in Oct. 2018.
A butterfly specialist, Burdisso dominated in the Wildcats' meets against Notre Dame and Iowa, finishing first by over two seconds in the 200 fly against Notre Dame before adding three more gold medals in the 200 fly, 100 fly and 200 medley relay against Iowa. The showstopper for Burdisso came in that 200 fly versus Iowa in which he set new school and pool records for Northwestern, touching in 1:44.14.
Brunzell has been red hot in the water this season, this now her sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award overall and her third consecutive. In just her first season with Northwestern, Brunzell is already the owner of two Northwestern pool records with a time of 59.76 in the 100 breast and a time of 2:08.61 in the 200 breast.
The breaststroker took home five first place finishes against Notre Dame and Iowa, four of those coming in individual events: the 200 breast versus Notre Dame and the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM versus Iowa.
Burdisso, Brunzell and all of the 'Cats will be back in action Friday as they welcome Cincinnati to Norris Aquatics Center at 3:30 p.m. CT.
