EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior forward Abi Scheid won Big Ten Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday for her impressive-two game stretch against Indiana and Penn State.
Additionally, the 'Cats entered the AP Top 25 Women's Basketball Poll for the first time this season, landing with a ranking of No. 22. It marks the first appearance in the poll since Jan. 24, 2016.
Scheid averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game with a .789 field-goal percentage and .800 three-point percentage in Northwestern's two Big Ten wins last week. She became the first Wildcat to win a weekly honor form the conference since Nia Coffey did so on Dec. 5, 2016.
The Elk River, Minn. native turned in one of the most memorable outings of her career against Penn State on Sunday. She earned her 1,000th career point on her first bucket of the game, becoming the second active Wildcat in the comma club along with junior Lindsey Pulliam. She finished with season-highs of 24 points, seven rebounds and six made threes.
Scheid's 6-6 mark from deep against the Nittany Lions set the program record for most threes made in a game without missing and tied the Big Ten record, accomplished just five other times previously. Scheid currently sports a 47.9 three-point percentage this season, putting her in contention to break the NU single-season record for three-point percentage of 44.8 percent, which has been done twice. Her current rate from deep would be the fifth-best three point percentage in a season in Big Ten history if the campaign ended today.
Scheid also featured heavily in Northwestern's comeback win on the road at No. 15 Indiana on Thursday, as she scored a team-high 16 points along with a season-high seven rebounds in a game-high 44 minutes.
The Wildcats are 16-2 overall this season and tied for first place in the Big Ten with a 6-1 record in conference. They face two massive tests on the road this week – Michigan State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT and No. 20 Maryland on the road Sunday at noon CT.
