EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern dominated throughout the match against SMU, but were undone at the penalty spot in a 1-0 loss Thursday night at Martin Stadium in the season opener..
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, as they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame at a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Match Notes
- Northwestern outshot SMU 9-4 and only allowed one shot on goal, which came on a penalty kick in the first half, converted by Allie Thornton.
- The Wildcats earned a penalty of their own in later in the half, but it and the ensuing rebound were both saved.
- NU outpossessed SMU 57% to 43% throughout the match. The 'Cats had 34% of the entire match's possession in their attacking half, compared to just 17% of the same figure for the Mustangs.
- Head coach Michael Moynihan saw 10 players make their Wildcat debuts: Graduate Taylor Hallmon, sophomores Olivia Stone and Francesca Docters, and first years Rowan Lapi, Paige Miller, Danika Austin, Lily Gilbertson, Aurea Martin, Marianna Annest and Reilly Riggs.
- Sophomore Haley Lawson, Martin and Hallmon all had quality chances for the Wildcats. Steigleder had multiple free kicks in the dying embers of the game, but could not find an equalizer.
