EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern student-athletes capped a remarkable 2018-19 academic year with unprecedented marks in the classroom.
All 19 varsity programs combined to post a team grade point average of 3.41 in the spring quarter, while the average student-athlete GPA was a 3.40 – both are the highest marks on record for a single quarter. An amazing 83% of student-athletes finished the final quarter of the academic calendar with a GPA above 3.00, while 46 Wildcats finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
For the 2018-19 academic year, the average team grade point average was a record 3.383.
"The continued academic excellence of our Wildcats is an enormous source of pride for the entire Northwestern family," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "They embody what the complete student-athlete experience can be; shining in the classroom, committing themselves as role models in the community and thriving in competition at the highest level. These young men and women are setting a standard for future Wildcats."
The completion of the spring quarter capped one of the most successful academic years, which included a school-record 265 student-athletes earning Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2018-19.
Northwestern also led all Big Ten institutions and ranked second among Power Five schools with 13 varsity programs receiving Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, given to programs that place in the top-10% of their respective sports in the latest APR multi-year data.
The Wildcats turned in a 98% overall Graduation Success Rate, which tied for the highest mark among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions and led the Big Ten Conference by five percentage points.
Northwestern capped the 2018-19 academic year with a school-record 86 student-athletes, across 16 varsity programs, earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar distinction. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. Among the 16 Northwestern programs represented, seven teams led their respective Big Ten sports: baseball (six), women's basketball (four), fencing (nine), football (12), lacrosse (13), men's soccer (four) and volleyball (five).
