EVANSTON, Ill. — On the final day of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Northwestern junior infielder Alex Erro was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round, while senior shortstop Jack Dunn was drafted in the 20th round by the Washington Nationals.
The selection for Dunn and Erro comes a day after Northwestern junior reliever Nick Paciorek was selected in the seventh round by the New York Yankees. The trio's selection marks the first time since 2004 that the Wildcats had three players taken in the same draft.
Erro had a breakout junior campaign, posting career-best, single-season marks in batting average (.322), hits (68), doubles (12), RBI (34) and slugging percentage (.455) that earned him First Team All-Big Ten honors. The Miami, Florida, native's 68 hits and 96 total bases this season led the team. For his career, Erro owns a .297 clip at the plate with 190 hits and a .411 slugging percentage in 157 games played.
"I am thrilled for Alex and his family," said head coach Spencer Allen. "Alex is an extremely talented baseball player and his drive to consistently improve his game has not only made him into a better player but also those around him better. He is a special talent that made an impact on our program ever since he arrived on campus and it's no surprise that MLB organizations took notice."
Dunn started every game at shortstop in his senior campaign, capping off a 211-game start streak, dating back to the first game of his rookie season. The consecutive start streak is the longest in Wildcat history. Dunn also finished 2019 with a team-best .340 batting average, 43 runs scored, and 36 RBI to also earn First Team All-Big Ten honors. The Alpharetta, Georgia, native is a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the best shortstop in college baseball. He ended his career with 230 hits, good for the ninth-most in Wildcat history.
"I am so incredibly proud, excited and fired up for Jack's opportunity to play at the next level," said Allen. "His work ethic, grittiness and leadership ability will immediately add value to the Washington Nationals organization. A winner on and off the field, he will bring a passion for the game each day."
Both Erro and Paciorek have one more year of eligibility.
