Wildcats Fall to Nebraska, 6-4

5/6/2019 6:53:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Nebraska topped Northwestern, 6-4, in the series finale on Monday afternoon at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park. The Wildcats had won the first two games of the set and finish with a series victory over the Cornhuskers.

Rookie Parker Hanks had a solid starting pitching performance, allowing only four hits over 4.0 innings pitched while allowing only two runs.

Nebraska struck first with a lead-off solo home run. The big fly was the first that Hanks has allowed this season; he previously owned the most innings pitched this season on the squad without surrendering a home run.

After three innings of effective pitching from Hanks, the Cornhuskers extended their advantage in the top of the fifth on an RBI double. Jack Pagliarini came on from the bullpen in the frame and escaped a bases-loaded jam.

The lead was shrunk in half in the bottom half of the fifth on a first-pitch solo home run by Casey O'Laughlin, his fourth of the season. The ball was hammered down the right field line, an estimated 384-foot moonshot that caromed off the side of the new Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Nebraska plated a pair in the top of the sixth in an inning that saw four Cornhuskers tally base-hits. Pagliarini, again, got out of a bases-loaded situation.

The Huskers scored once more in the seventh and once more in the eighth. Northwestern, however, inched closer with a two-RBI single off the bat of Ben Dickey in the bottom of the eighth inning.

NU threatened in the bottom of the ninth, plating one, but fell shy of the Cornhuskers.

Northwestern next will play a three-game series at Rutgers on Friday through Sunday. The set will be NU's last road games of the season.
