EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern baseball earned three All-Big Ten honors and three placements on the All-Freshman team, it was announced by the Conference Tuesday.
The plaudits are the most All-Big Ten selections for Northwestern since 2013.
Senior Jack Dunn (SS) and junior Alex Erro (3B) were both named to the First Team, while first-year Shawn Goosenberg (2B) was named to the Third Team.
For Dunn and Erro, both First Team honors are their first of their career. Dunn was named to the Third Team last season, while this is Erro's first All-Big Ten award.
Dunn started every game at shortstop in his senior campaign, capping off a 211-game start streak, dating back to the first game of his rookie season. The consecutive start streak is the longest in Wildcat history. Dunn also finished 2019 with a .340 batting average, 43 runs scored, and 36 RBI. He ended his career with 230 hits, good for the ninth-most in Wildcat history.
Erro set new career highs in nearly every batting category in 2019, including a .322 batting average. He led the team with 68 hits and 96 total bases.
Goosenberg becomes the first NU rookie selected to an All-Big Ten Team since Eric Jokisch in 2008. The California native led the team with 14 doubles and three triples.
Northwestern also had three players selected to the All-Freshman Team: Goosenberg, Michael Doherty (SP), and Michael Trautwein (C). This marks the most Wildcats ever selected to the All-Freshman Team, which has been awarded since 2009.
Doherty developed into one of NU's best pitchers in 2019, posting a 2.43 ERA in Big Ten competition, the seventh-best mark in the Conference. He went 5-1 with a 3.72 ERA overall in the season, but his best contributions came as a Northwestern starting pitcher, where he had a 1.87 ERA (9 ER/43.1 IP) over nine outings.
Trautwein was one of the fiercest defensive catchers in the nation in his rookie campaign, posting the best caught-stealing rate in the Big Ten, a 41% clip. He hit .243 in his first season in Evanston, starting 43 games.
Senior Danny Katz was named Northwestern's Sportsmanship Award winner, it was also announced.
