EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern battled with four unanswered runs, but could not overcome a first inning in which Minnesota plated five, falling, 5-4, on Thursday at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
The 'Cats nabbed their first run in the second, when Jack Kelly led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, then came home after two ground-outs.
Casey O'Laughlin hit that second groundout for his first RBI of the game. Later on, he notched his second RBI on a liner to left field. The single cut the Minnesota lead to 5-2. It also brought home Willie Bourbon, who scored two runs on the afternoon and went 2-for-3 with a double.
Then, Ben Dickey and Kelly both hit RBI singles in the fifth to cut the deficit to one. Kelly went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and has now reached base in his last nine games.
But, Northwestern managed only one hit after that two-run fifth.
After a shaky first inning, starter Ryan Bader settled down in a big way, throwing five scoreless, allowing just one hit and no runs. Sam Lawrence added three innings of scoreless ball in relief.
The Golden Gophers scored no runs and nabbed just three hits after their first inning barrage, but it was enough to secure the victory.
Northwestern hosts Minnesota for the second game of their three-game series on Friday at 2 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on BTN.
