EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern led all Big Ten institutions and ranked second among Power Five schools with 13 varsity programs receiving Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
"The commitment to excellence our student-athletes demonstrate in the classroom reflects the culture across our great university," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "Each year the group sets a national standard for impact in the classroom, in the community and in competition. Whether representing us as students, citizens or athletes, our Wildcats continue to make the entire Northwestern community proud."
Northwestern's baseball, field hockey, football, men's basketball, men's soccer, women's basketball, cross country, fencing, women's golf, lacrosse, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving and volleyball programs earned the honor by placing in the top-10% of their respective sports in the latest multi-year APR scores.
This marks the eighth consecutive year that more than half of NU's 19 varsity programs received the recognition and the total of 13 is the highest number in four years.
Wildcats men's soccer, women's golf and volleyball have received the Public Recognition Award in each of the 14 years of the program.
Northwestern men's soccer, women's golf and volleyball are among an elite group of 73 teams from across the country that have received the Public Recognition Award in each of the 14 years of the program.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 8.
