TUCSON, Ariz. - Northwestern's season came to a close on Saturday as the Wildcats fell to Arizona, 56-42 in the WNIT Championship game.
The Wildcats were within four entering the second quarter, but it was not enough to overpower Arizona in front sold-out McKale Memorial Center.
Veronica Burton led the team in scoring with 16 points, two steals and two assists, marking her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring effort. The Newton, Mass. native averaged 13.1 points in the postseason and finishes her first year campaign as the Big Ten leader in steals with 81 on the season.
Following Burton in scoring was Lindsey Pulliam who posted her first double-double of her career with 14 points and a career high 10 rebounds, including seven on the defensive end. The sophomore finished the year as the Wildcats' leading scorer for the second consecutive year.
Both Burton and Pulliam were named to the WNIT All-Tournament team.
Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah pulled down 11 rebounds in her final game as a Wildcat. Her 78 rebounds in the six WNIT games are the most by any player in the history of the tournament. Kunaiyi-Akpanah finished her remarkable career with 1,112 career rebounds, the most rebounds in a single-season with 404 and her 19 double-doubles in her senior campaign give her sole possession the Northwestern single-season double-double record.
Northwestern boasts its fifth winning season in the last six years under head coach Joe McKeown with a 21-15 record.
