'Cats Earn 24th Straight NCAA Tournament Berth, Face Princeton

EVANSTON, Ill. — For the 30th time in program history, and 24th consecutive season, Northwestern's women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats will play Princeton on Friday, May 3, in Seattle, Washington.
The Wildcats (15-10) join host and No. 10 seed Washington, Princeton and Army West Point for first and second round action in the Emerald City. Northwestern opens up tournament action against the Tigers on Friday at 4 p.m. CT, while the Huskies battle the Black Knights at 7 p.m. CT. The winners of Friday's contest will meet at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, May 4, for a trip to the Round of 16.
The first and second rounds will be played May 3-5 at 16 regional sites around the country. The final four rounds are set for May 16-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Team semifinals and finals are scheduled for May 18 and 19, respectively, with singles and doubles play set for May 20-25.
Northwestern has qualified for the national tournament in every season dating back to 1999, when head coach Claire Pollard took over the program. The Wildcats have advanced to at least the Round of 16 on 13 occasions during the current stretch. NU has played in the national quarterfinals three times.
Pollard's 21 consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament with Northwestern is the fifth longest streak by an active head coach at the same program.
The 2019 season has seen a mix of veteran leadership and youth emergence. First year Clarissa Hand has played all but one dual match at the No. 1 singles position. Hand, who is NU's highest-ranked singles player at No. 40, owns 12 singles victories at the top spot in her first campaign – the most by any Big Ten rookie. Junior Julie Byrne has won six straight singles matches, all in straight sets. Senior Lee Or won a team-best eight Big Ten singles matches to go 8-2 against league opponents. Or and Hand are NU's only ranked doubles team (No. 62) and have gone 14-8 in the spring.
Northwestern is 3-1 all-time against Princeton with the last meeting taking place in 2010. NU is 4-3 all-time versus Washington, while the Wildcats and Army have never met.
