EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Julie Byrne was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Monday after leading No. 31 Northwestern to a perfect 3-0 week, including a win over No. 18 Ohio State. It is the first time Byrne has earned the distinction.
Byrne, who has won seven of her past 10 singles matchups, dominated at No. 2 singles this weekend. She defeated No. 83 Shiori Fukuda of No. 18 Ohio State (6-0, 6-4), only the second player in the conference to do so to that point. Byrne has won her past four Big Ten singles matchups in straight sets, and she boasts an overall mark of 17-8 on the season, the best for any 'Cat.
At doubles, Byrne and partner Hannah McColgan continued their exceptional season at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The duo secured a solid 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Chicago State, their first win at No. 1 doubles this season, before defeating the 74th-ranked pair of Danielle Wolf and Isabelle Boulais of Ohio State. This is Byrne and McColgan's third win against a ranked duo this season.
Byrne is the second Wildcat to earn Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors, following first-year Clarissa Hand, who has claimed the recognition twice this season.
Northwestern earned the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten tournament and will battle No. 4 Ohio State on Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska.
