EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior Stephanie Lau has been selected to represent the United States Women's Team at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup, June 7-9. The announcement was made on the Golf Channel Wednesday evening.
Lau will be the first Northwestern women's golf student-athlete to represent her country at the team level in international competition. She will join the 24-team roster, made up of 12 women and 12 men, led by Scott Limbaugh and Mic Potter.
The Alotian Club, one of American's premier golf clubs will host the 23rd-annual event. The Ryder Cup-style competition will be the first to be played in the United States expanded to include men's and women's USA collegiate golfers against their counterparts from around the world.
"We are so excited for Stephanie that she has earned this remarkable honor of representing her country on an international stage," head coach Emily Fletcher said. "Stephanie has proven she is one of the top amateurs in the world and we know she will represent our program with pride as a member of Team USA."
A three-time All-Big Ten honoree and the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Lau leads the Wildcats with a 72.20 average in five events this season. Her 72.12 average in 2016 set the second-lowest single-season mark in program history and was the best ever by a NU rookie. She was named a WGCA Second-Team All-American and Golfweek Third-Team All-American in 2016.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla., in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top male university/college players matching the United States against Europe. Beginning in 2019, the participants included corresponding women golfers who were added to both the USA and International teams and will became the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
The United States leads the all-time series, 10-9-1.
Arnold Palmer Cup is supported by Arnie's Army Charitable Foundation. The Arnold Palmer Cup provides a platform for perpetuating Arnold Palmer's commitment to youth development and the growth of amateur/collegiate golf.
