Mao and Lau Go Low, Wildcats Move Up the Leaderboard

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Seniors Stephanie Lau and Janet Mao played bogey-free rounds Saturday to move No. 17 Northwestern five spots up the leaderboard at the PING/ASU Invitational.
The senior duo each posted their best rounds of the season, with Lau's 4-under, 68, leading the Wildcats for the second straight day. Lau opened and closed her second round with birdies and shot a 3-under, 69.
NU was one of just four teams to shoot under par in the second round and is tied for third in the 15-team field at 4-over. No. 4 Stanford leads the field at 5-under.
Lau is tied for third after 36 holes at 4-under, just two shots off the pace. Her round Saturday marked her 10th round of par or better and fourth round in the 60's this season. She has posted seven rounds of 68 or better in her career.
Mao recorded her fourth career round of 69 or better and seventh round of par or better this season. Saturday marked the third time this season a pair of 'Cats posted rounds in the 60's on the same day.

Chicago's Big Ten Team put the field on alert early Saturday with the Lau, Mao and junior Brooke Riley all making the turner under par. Riley and Mao made a pair of birdies on the front to make the turn at 2-under, while Lau reeled off three-straight birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to shoot a front-nine 33.
Riley stumbled to start the back with a bogey and double bogey but closed her round with seven-straight pars to finish with a 1-over, 73. She is tied for 31st through 36 holes at 4-over.
Mao had eight-straight pars after making a birdie on No. 9, before closing her round with a birdie on the 407-yard, par-4 18th. She also is tied for 31st at 40-over.
