Rivera earned a 21-6 tech fall over Army's Trey Chalifoux in his first bout of the Championships. Rivera, the top-seeded matman in the 125-pound weight class, improved to 26-1 on the season, remaining undefeated against 125-pound wrestlers.
The victory was Rivera's team-best tenth tech fall of the season; no other Wildcat has more than four. Nineteen of his 26 victories (73.7 percent) of his wins this season have come via bonus point decisions.
Deakin used dominating first and second periods to help lift himself to an opening victory over Brown's Christian Labrie. Deakin will face Purdue's Griffin Parriott, the 19th seed, in the next round. Deakin topped Parriott, 8-2, in their only meeting this season, at the CKLV Invitational.
After a scoreless first period between Jennings and his opponent, Cory Gilliland-Daniel (UNC), Jennings was in a precarious position, as his foe used a reversal to take a 2-0 lead. Jennings proceeded to score seven unanswered points, including a riding time point, to seal the victory.
He will wrestle Sam Stoll of Iowa in the second round after Stoll upset Michigan's Mason Parris, the fifth seed.
Redshirt first-year Tyler Morland (165), making his first-ever appearance at the Championships, fell to Joseph Smith of Oklahoma State, who is ranked 13th in the nation by Intermat, via 10-5 decision. Morland will wrestle Colston DiBlasi (George Mason) in the consolation pigtail.
Junior Shayne Oster dropped his first bout via fall to second-ranked and second-seeded Micah Jordan of Ohio State in three minutes and 37 seconds. Oster will face Jared Prince of Navy in the wrestlebacks.
