Updated 2019 Big Ten Championships Brackets | Session I Recap and Results

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The first day of action at the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships came to a close with the completion of Session II Saturday night at Williams Arena.

All ten NU wrestlers hit the mats in the second session, with six of them moving on to compete on Sunday. Four Wildcats have already booked their tickets to Pittsburgh for the NCAA Championships.

The evening highlight came from top-ranked No. 1 seed Sebastian Rivera, who sealed a spot in the 125-pound finals with ease. The redshirt sophomore dispatched No. 4 seed RayVon Foley of Michigan State by major decision for the second time this season. The victory set up what will be a highly-anticipated championship bout between Rivera and No. 2 Spencer Lee, also serving as a rematch of the finals at Midlands earlier this season where Rivera took the title via decision.

The other two nationally-ranked #B1GCats, Ryan Deakin and Conan Jennings, have also already wrestled their way into the NCAA tournament by advancing to the consolation semifinals to seal a top-six finish in their respective weight classes.

At 157 pounds, No. 3 seed Deakin recorded a pair of wins in the evening session, defeating Wisconsin's Garret Model and John Van Brill of Rutgers. He will wrestle Michigan's Alec Pantaleo tomorrow in Session III with the winner earning a spot in the third-place match.

In the heavyweight bracket, Jennings had already advanced to the semifinals, where he took on No. 2 seed Anthony Cassar of Penn State. A loss to the Nittany Lion means Jennings will match up with Maryland's Youssif Hemida in the first session tomorrow for a chance to wrestle for third place.

In addition to the trio of ranked Wildcats, Tyler Morland put his own stamp on the night by clinching a spot in the NCAA Championships at 165 pounds. The first year took the mat against Illinois' Joey Gunther, seeded one spot ahead of Morland at No. 9. In an exciting back-and-forth contest, Morland pulled out the win in the third period, recording a 7-4 decision that guaranteed he will place in his first career appearance at the Championships.

Also in the third session tomorrow, Shayne Oster will battle Malik Amine of Michigan in the seventh-place match. The two met earlier this year in the dual, where Oster came out on top. And at 133 lbs., Colin Valdiviez will face a familiar foe in Wisconsin's Jens Lantz as he competes for a chance to earn the ninth automatic NCAA qualifier spot for his weight class.

Results for all Northwestern wrestlers in Session II are listed below, and full updated brackets for all weight classes can be found at the top of the page.
