Roberts Sets 1-Mile School Record; McCardell Shines at USATF Meet

EVANSTON, Ill. — A pair of Wildcats shined on opposite sides of the country Saturday afternoon as junior Aubrey Roberts set a Northwestern school record in the mile at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, and first-year Rachel McCardell qualified for Team USA with a seventh-place finish at the USATF Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.

Roberts finished fifth in the 1-mile at the prestigious Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, crossing the finish line in 4:43.88. Fellow junior Kelly O'Brien finished fourth in her heat and 14th overall in the mile with a time of 4:50.86 and Sarah Nicholson, competing indoors for the first time this season, posted a time of 5:05.06.

Senior Isabel Seidel competed unattached in the 3000m and crossed the line in 10:05.48.

Across the country, McCardell continued the Wildcats' recent run of success at USATF events with her strong showing at the Cross Country Championships. McCardell led a trio of 'Cats with a 21:45 finish. She will travel to Trinidad and Tobago as a member of the USA Track & Field Junior team to compete in the North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on February 16.

Fellow first years Sielle Kearney (22:21) and Sara McCoy (23:44) finished 11th and 26th, respectively.

Northwestern will return to action next weekend by splitting the squad between the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan, and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
