Northwestern Athletics Announces Champions for Wildcat Women Initiative

12/5/2019 1:30:00 PM | General

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern Athletics is proud to announce a new giving program for women's athletics at Northwestern – Champions for Wildcat Women. The purpose of this initiative is to increase fundraising support for women's varsity programs, empower female student-athletes and celebrate the incredible advocates of women's athletics within the Northwestern family.

Thanks to a generous matching gift challenge from Wendy Nelson, a former Northwestern student-athlete and current trustee, this initiative has already seen great success since its launch in September. Financial support for women's programs is up by 40% and 148 new donors have made gifts to the program.

"Champions for Wildcat Women will be a tremendously impactful program for our female student-athletes," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips. "Led by the passion of Wendy Nelson, this program provides an important platform to drive support for women's athletics at Northwestern."

Members of the Northwestern community are invited to join the celebration with our first annual Champions for Wildcat Women Summit Weekend, which will take place January 31-February 2, 2020 in Evanston.

The weekend will include a welcome reception, guest speakers, networking sessions with current and former Wildcat student athletes and the opportunity to train in our world class facilities under the instruction of NU Sports Performance Coaches. Throughout the weekend, there will be five different chances to cheer on the 'Cats with our student-athletes in action across Welsh-Ryan Arena, Combe Tennis Center and Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field.

Speaking panels will cover topics ranging from Title IX and Empowering Women Leaders to Nutrition and Active Lifestyle with world class speakers including Wendy NelsonPatti PhillipsKatrina Adams and Christine Brennan. Participants will also get the opportunity to hear from our current student-athletes and head coaches including Kelly Amonte Hiller (lacrosse), Tracey Fuchs (field hockey) and Kate Drohan (softball).
