EVANSTON, ILL. - Northwestern wrapped up the final day of the TYR Invitational with two commanding victories. The women's team took down their competition with 1404 points, and the men took the top spot with a score of 1145.
Over the course of the invitational, Northwestern set three school records, eight pool records, and tallied 29 event wins.
Northwestern started the day fast, breaking two pool records and the Wildcats qualifying through to the afternoon finals in 46 spots across four events.
In the preliminaries, first-year Hannah Brunzell out touched her teammate to set a new pool record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.42. Teammate Calypso Sheridan followed suit in the next event, breaking a five year old pool record in the 200 fly. The junior beat her competition by over a second to earn an NCAA 'B' cut in a time of 1:58.02.
Not content with their record-breaking preliminary times, both swimmers bested their own races to set two more records in the final events. Brunzell beat her 200 breast time by 1.81 seconds to set a new pool record of 2:08.61. Sheridan took 1.11 seconds off her time to add another pool and school record to her resume, touching the wall in 1:56.91, the fastest in Northwestern history.
The 'Cats tallied two final records in the last women's event of the invite. The 400 free relay team of Sheridan, junior Maddie Smith, and seniors Malorie Han and Nicole Aarts dominated the race, finishing over half a pool length ahead of their competition with a time of 3:18.00. Their win set a new pool and school record.
Northwestern swimmers took the top spot in ten events on the day, completing 1-2-3 sweeps in six events. The 'Cats started off the final sessions with back-to-back sweeps in the women's 1650 free and 200 back. Junior Ilektra Lebl led the Wildcats in the 1650 free with a time of 16:49.07. Aarts followed right after in the 200 back, touching the wall in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:55.85.
In the women's 200 breast, Brunzell's record-breaking time led a pack of six Wildcats in the top spots. Junior Sophie Angus followed close behind with a 'B' cut time of 2:12.55.
For the men's team, three 'Cats topped the leaderboards in the 1650 free and the 200 breast. Junior DJ Hwang set a new personal record in the 1650 free, earning third on Northwestern's all-time list with a 'B' cut time of 15:15.52. First-year Marcus Mok also makes it to third all-time in the Northwestern record book with his 'B' cut time of 1:56.85 in the 200 breast.
