EVANSTON, IL -- Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving is set to host the annual TYR Invitational this weekend at the Norris Aquatics Center, beginning on Friday, Nov. 22 and running until Sunday, Nov. 24.
The 'Cats will compete against five teams including UNLV, Toledo, Saint Louis, Simon Fraser, and Northern Iowa.
The Wildcats dominated last year's invite with impressive victories for both the men's and women's teams, securing nine NCAA 'B' times in the process. The women clinched the meet with 1462.5 points, while the men tallied 1225.5 points. The women's team spent the weekend shattering pool records and personal bests. Junior Calypso Sheridan broke the school record in both the 200 breast and 200 back, while the women's relay team of Sheridan, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara, and Malorie Han broke the pool and program record for the 200 medley relay.
Last year continued Northwestern's dominance of the TYR Invitational, with the men's teaming winning their third year in a row and the women's squad having won every year.
The 'Cats last weekend of competition ended as a successful trip to Michigan, defeating Oakland 206-93 on Friday, and taking down Michigan State 171-129 in East Lansing on Saturday.
Northwestern began the weekend winning 28 of 32 competitions against Oakland, including a season-best time of 1:30.84 in the 200 medley relay from the men's team of Manu Bacarizo, Marcus Mok, Ezra Mizgala, and Andrew Zhang. Senior Liam Gately also recorded a season-best time of 1:39.61 in the 200 free. For the women, Ilektra Lebl finished first in the 1000 free.
The Wildcats finished the undeafted weekend with 20 event wins against Michigan State. The women's of Sheridan, Guerva, Hannah Brunzell, and Maddie Smith dominated the 400 medley relay. First-year Yulia Groysman also recorded a season best of 4:58.71 in the 500 free, while junior Krystal Lara finished first in the 200 free.
Prelims are set to begin on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m., while finals start at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday
