EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will continue its winter schedule with a trio of Wildcats competing at the Meyo Invitational and another threesome at the USA Track and Field Cross Country Championships.
Juniors Sara Nicholson, Aubrey Roberts and Kelly O'Brien will make the short trip to South Bend, Indiana, to compete in the 1-mile, while first years Sielle Kearney, Rachel McCardell and Sara McCoy will leave the frigid temperatures of the Polar Vortex and head south to Tallahassee, Florida.
The second day of the Meyo Invitational, which will feature the 1-mile and the 3000m including senior Isabel Siedel competing unattached, will start on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. Fans can watch the event through the ACC Network on the WatchESPN app.
Roberts is coming off a first-place finish in the mile two weeks ago at the Illini Classic as she continued her dominant junior campaign. The first women's cross country All-American in program history won the Illini Classic in a time of 4:52.72, the third-fastest mile in program history.
"Sarah Nicholson is going to open her season after ending the cross country season with an injury. Sarah is a tenacious racer and this is part of the building block for her 5K and outdoor 10K aspirations. Kelly O'Brien will toe the line as a mile specialist and with her outdoor regional 1500m qualification is looking to dip below 4:50. Aubrey will join them and work to better her season opener of 4:49 in preparation for a late season 5K."
O'Brien and Nicholson will be competing in the mile indoors for the first time this season.
The USATF Cross Country Championships prevent a great opportunity for the first-year Wildcats.
"Rachel, Sara and Sielle are looking to earn a spot on one of two junior teams, either the NACAC or IAAF World Championship," head coach 'AHavalah Haynes said. "They have to be top six in order to qualify. Since they returned to campus on January 8 the three have had their best training block since the first week of preseason in August. They all have a shot to qualify, which is exciting for the program and we hope to continue the recent success the Wildcats have had at the USA Cross Country Championships."
The trio of first years were an integral part of the Wildcats' lineup during the fall and will be competing for the first time since the cross country season concluded in November. McCardell and Kearney were a part of the 'Cats' lineup at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, both running season-best 6K times. McCoy competed in a pair of events in the fall, finishing 25th in the season-opening EIU open.
