‘Cats top off double header with win at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio —Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off the weekend by winning a combined 19 events en route to defeating Cincinnati at the Keating Aquatics Center. The men won 172.5-127.5, while the women outpaced the Bearcats 170-129.
 
The 'Cats got off to a fast start, as the men's and women's 200 medley relay teams both finished first. The men's team of Ryan Gridley, Will Hofstadter, Arjun Sharma and Andrew Zhang touched the wall in 1:30.26. Nicole Aarts, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara and Lily Kurzydlo finished in 1:41.59 for the women.
 
Sophomore Calypso Sheridan swept all three of her individual events. She and junior Krytal Lara finished 1-2 in the 100 back, with times of 54.35 and 56.64, respectively. Sheridan then won the 200 back with a time of 1:59.82, while first year Emma Theobald touched in 2:01.86, taking second. Sheridan capped off her day by taking the top spot in the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.90, while Angus finished second in 2:17.51.
 
Angus continued her success in the 100 breast, winning with a time of 1:02.85, while sophomore Becky Kamau came in second at 1:04.96.
 
First-years Andrew Zhang and Ezra Mizgala finished 1-2 in the men's 50 free. Zhang finished in 49.36, and Mizgala put in a season-best effort, touching the wall in 20.92. Zhang also clinched another victory with a 49.36 in the 100 back. First-year Manu Bacarzio won the 200 back with a time of 1:45.82.
 
In the 100 free, junior Malorie Han was the first to touch with a time of 51.53. Ryan Gridley won the 200 free for the men with a time of 1:39.54.
 
The 'Cats took the top four spots in the women's 100 fly. Guevara led the way, followed Jasmine Hellmer, Lara and Aarts. For the men, senior Ryan Tate and Sharma earned the top two spots, with Tate coming in at 50.02 and Sharma right behind at 50.07.
 
First year Tara Vovk and senior Alex Grimes closed out the individual events as the last winning duo for the 'Cats, claiming first and second in the 200 IM. Vovk finished in 2:04.26, while Grimes touched in 2:06.44.
 
The men capped off the weekend in fashion by clinching first and second in the 200 free relay. The team of Andrew Zhang, Hofstadter, Mizgala and Bundy won with a time of 1:22.26, while Peter Lewczyk, Ryan Gridley, Tate and Gately finished second in 1:23.49.
 
While the swimmers racked up first and second place finishes, the 'Cats were also dominating on the boards, winning 60 of 76 possible points. Senior Olivia Rosendahl swept both events for the women, winning the one meter with a score of 306.40 and the three meter with a 316.30. On the men's side, Evan Labuda, Yohan Eskrick- Parkinson and Ben Magliato finished 1-2-3 in both events. Labuda's 282.85 on the one-meter springboard was a season best.
 
The Wildcats will return to Evanston for their final home match of the season, a tri-dual against Minnesota and Purdue that kicks off Friday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.
