Roberts Wins Mile to Pace Wildcats at Illini Classic

FINAL RESULTS
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Junior Aubrey Roberts won the mile at the Illini Classic with a time of 4:52.75 to lead the Wildcats in their second indoor track meet of the season.
Roberts finished two seconds faster than the next best competitor in the mile and ran the third-fastest mile in school history, just three seconds off Jena Pianin's record of 4:49.81 set in 2015.
Roberts finished fourth in the 800m and ran the third fastest 800m time in school history as well with a 2:17.50. Pianin also holds the record in the 800m with a 2:15.08 set in 2015.
"It was a positive opener," head coach A 'Havahla Haynes said. "We challenged the women with the goal of winning their heat and they rose to the occasion, and led to some Top-10 times. I think our first years had a solid showing, with many of them running indoor track for the first time."
First year Olivia Verbeke led the rest of the competitors in the 800m with a 2:26.53. Her fellow classmate Vannessa Garcia finished just one spot behind her with a time of 2:27.39. Hannah Hall rounded out a trio of strong first-year finishes with a 2:28.74. Junior Kelly O
Brien was right behind them with a time of 2:29.58.
Hall and Garcia also turned in solid races in the mile, finishing within one spot of each other in 12th and 13th. Hall ran a 5:16.54 while Garcia finished in 5:19.29
Verbeke also competed in the 400m and finished 14th with a 1:03.42.
The Wildcats did not compete in the 3000m event due to travel concerns.
