No. 19 Northwestern Makes Noise on Day One of Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — No. 19 Northwestern made some noise on day one of the Miami Spring Invite by taking six-of-eight singles matches from No. 17 Miami and three-of-four doubles contests over No. 2 Vanderbilt.
First year Clarissa Hand (No. 100) highlighted the 'Cats big day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba from Miami. The loss was only Perez-Somarriba's second career setback at home and her first home loss since Sept. 23, 2017.
Julie Byrne rallied and claimed NU's second singles win over a ranked opponent by topping No. 82 Daniella Roldan, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2. Caroline Pozo earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Miami's Carla Girbau, while Rheeya Doshi, Carol Finke and Vanessa Streng each took home three-set wins.
The Wildcats square off with No. 2 Vanderbilt in doubles action. Byrne teamed up with Hannah McColgan to upset No. 26 Summer Dvorak/Christina Rosca, 6-4, while No. 32 Finke/Pozo held court with a 6-4 win over Lauren Gish/Amanda Meyer.
Hand and Or grabbed Northwestern's other doubles victory with a 6-2 decision over Fernanda Contreras/Emily Smith.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow to battle Kentucky in singles at 8 a.m. CT and Miami in doubles at noon.
