Wildcats Set to Compete at Illini Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern Cross Country program will open the 2019 calendar year this Saturday in Champaign, Illinois, at the Illini Classic.
The Wildcats will be competing in their second indoor track meet of the year. Junior Aubrey Roberts opened the indoor track season by shattering the school record in the 5K at the Sharon Colyear-Danville BU Season Opener on December 2 with a time of 15:32.38.
The 'Cats will send eight competitors to the Illini Classic with a focus on building a base coming out of the winter break.
"The team has been together five days since winter break ended and has done a tremendous job picking up where we left off in the fall," head coach 'AHavahla Haynes said. "The women will be opening up with solely base building miles. It's important for us this weekend to honor our preparedness for competition and open at or as close to individual personal bests."
Roberts will lead Chicago's Big Ten Team as one of seven individuals competing in the 800 and will also compete in the mile. Also competing in the 800 will be first-year Vanessa Garcia, first-year Hannah Hall, junior Kelly O'Brien, sophomore Hannah Tobin, first-year Olivia Verbeke, and junior Mackenzie Wilson.
Sophomore Ishwari Dasgupta will compete in the 400 meters. A complete list of the Wildcats' events is below.
