Junior Aubrey Roberts finished sixth in a field of 154 runners
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Aubrey Roberts led the Northwestern cross country team to a sixth place overall finish out of 19 teams at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. on Friday afternoon.
In her first 5K of the season, Roberts finished the race in a personal best time of 16:51.78, becoming the only Wildcat to break 17 minutes on the day and crossing the line in sixth place overall. She was also one of only eight runners in a field of 154 to finish in under 17 minutes.
In her first collegiate cross country 5K, junior Sarah Nicholson crossed the line in the 21st spot with a time of 17:19.53. First years Rachel McCardell and Sielle Kearney also finished the 5K course in under 18 minutes, at 17:49.65 and 17:52.76, respectively. McCardell shaved 30 seconds off her previous collegiate best that she ran in the first meet of the season at the EIU Walt Crawford Open. Kearney also knocked 20 seconds off her last 5K time.
Junior Kelly O'Brien rounded out the top five scorers for the 'Cats, crossing the line in 18:20.83 in her second 5K of the 2018 campaign.
"It was a good day for the team," said head coach A'Havahla Haynes. "We raced hard and managed the fast pace on the flat Notre Dame course. We have some things to work on, but we have four to six weeks to get them ironed out before the championship season starts."
Northwestern was topped by BYU, Furman, Florida State, Notre Dame and Duke – the first four of which are nationally ranked squads. The 'Cats topped B1G Ten opponent Iowa, finishing with 221 points.
In the Open Division, sophomore Amanda Davis and first year Vanessa Garcia both ran their fastest 5K times of the season so far as Davis specifically ran 32 seconds in South Bend.
The Wildcats return to action when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the second time this season to compete in the Pre-NCAA Invitational on Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. CT.
