Wildcats Set to Race at Notre Dame Invitational

Northwestern will run the 5K race in South Bend for the first time since 2015
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern cross country team is set to race in its third meet of the season at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 28.
In the 63rd annual invitational, the women will run a 5K – their second of the season. The 'Cats will race seven women in the Blue Division and three in the Open Division. They will be up against 19 other women's teams, including B1G Ten opponent Iowa.
The Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational will continue to build on its storied tradition as the field will also feature nationally ranked competitors, BYU, California, Furman and Notre Dame.
The last time the Wildcats competed at the Joe Piane Invitational was in 2015.
Head coach 'AHavahla Haynes said that the team has trained hard in order to prepare for the intense competition at the invitational.
"As a coaching staff we are excited!" said Haynes. "The women have been training for six plus weeks and are ready for a competitive race that will truly test them. Workouts have been building upon themselves and our top 10 have had very consistent training to now."
Not every member of the team raced in the only 5K of the 2018 campaign so far at the EIU Walt Crawford Open, making Friday the first 5000 meter run for a majority of the runners.
At their last at the Badger Classic, juniors Aubrey Roberts and Sarah Nicholson led the team with top-five finishes, crossing the line in 21:14.1 and 21:39.9, respectively in the 6K race. They are planning to carry that momentum to Notre Dame.
"We are looking to be competitive at the front and close the gap between our number one-five scorers," said Haynes.
