No. 21 'Cats Undone By Overtime Drama

EVANSTON, Ill. – A free kick goal with no time remaining in the first overtime period sunk No. 21 Northwestern against Ohio State Sunday in a 1-0 loss at Martin Stadium.
With two clock stoppages in the last 30 seconds of the period, Ohio State had six seconds left to get off a free kick from 25 yards out. Izzy Rodriguez whipped a free kick into the bottom right corner for the the golden goal.
Northwestern moved to 7-2-2 on the season and a 1-2-1 mark in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes improved to 5-4 and 2-1 in conference.
First year Mackenzie Wood started in goal and made six saves in a strong effort by the Wildcat defense.
The Wildcats dominated the run of play in the first half and had their chances to take the lead. Sophomore Kayleigh Stahlschmidt and senior Kayla Sharples each had two shots that were close to scoring, with Buckeye keeper Devon Kerr coming up with tough saves.
Northwestern's clearest chance came in the second half in the 83rd minute in a scramble after a set piece. Sophomore Nia Harris dribbled towards the endline inside the box and backheeled the ball to senior Hannah Davison. The center back skied her shot from ten yards out and the game went to overtime.
The late drama in the first overtime period proved to be the difference. Ohio State had a corner kick with 46 seconds to play, and then earned a second corner kick nine seconds later. The referee stopped the clock for the corner kick, and on the ensuing play, he later awarded a foul for contact outside the box.
After encroachment from the Northwestern wall, he stopped the clock once more with six seconds left. Izzy Rodriguez buried the resulting free kick as the clock virtually ran out, and the Buckeyes escaped with three points.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action at Martin Stadium on Friday night when it welcomes Michigan for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
