‘Cats Travel to Madison for Badger Classic

The Wildcats will run their first 6K of the 2018 campaign
Evanston, Ill. – Northwestern will race in its second meet of the season when the 'Cats travel to Madison, Wis. to participate in the Badger Classic on Friday, September 14 at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats will run the 6K at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. The last time NU raced at Wisconsin was in 2015 when it competed in the Badger Season Opener, the first event under then new head coach 'AHavahla Haynes. The 'Cats finished third in the meet.
"The team is excited to get on this course," said Haynes. "Heading into the Badger Classic, we are looking to further develop our race strategy. Our two goals are to have a fast first kilometer and be prepared to run a focused and intentional final kilometer."
The Badgers are ranked No. 7 in the preseason rankings by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches Poll. The meet will also feature Big East opponent Marquette.
The race will serve as preparation for the Wildcats who will be running on the exact NCAA Championship course for the Pre-NCAA Invitational in October and potentially the NCAA Championships in November.
"By running the course early we can build confidence for our return trip in October against the best in the nation," said Haynes.
Northwestern is looking to build off its momentum from the EIU Walt Crawford Open in which it earned a first place finish and swept the top three spots, led by junior Kelly O'Brien and first years Sielle Kearney and Rachel McCardell. With a week off under their belts, the 'Cats will be back to full force as the focus shifts from the underclassmen to the team's juniors and seniors.
