Northwestern Drops Series Opener at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northwestern dropped a back-and-forth affair to Purdue, 8-7, Friday night in the series opener between the two programs.
Northwestern (14-26, 4-15 B1G) tallied 10 hits compared to Purdue's (25-16, 11-14 B1G) six knocks.
The Wildcats lived on the long ball Friday night as Jack Claeys tallied his sixth of the season, while Casey O'Laughlin recorded his first career home run. Claeys finished the contest 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. O'Laughlin went 1-for-4 with a three-run blast.
Jack Dunn tallied a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.Ben Dickey finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a RBI and a run scored.
Quinn Lavelle started for the 'Cats and went 5.1 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out one.
Northwestern struck first in the contest via Claeys' opposite field home run that brought home Alex Erro from second in the top of the third to put NU up 2-0.
Purdue answered back by scoring five unanswered runs over the fourth and fifth frames to take a 5-2 lead.
The Wildcats answered in the top of the sixth when Connor Lind and Dickey brought home runs to make it a 5-4 contest. O'Laughlin came to the dish with the Wildcats down a run and took a pitch over the right field wall to put NU in front, 7-5.
Purdue scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead and hold on for the 8-7 win.
Northwestern and Purdue return to the diamond tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT.
