WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Northwestern saw it singles and doubles participants close out their 2018 season Thursday at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships on the campus of Wake Forest University.

Erin Larner had her run in the NCAA Singles Championship come to an end in the second round in an early morning match. Matched up against Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse, Larner gave the tournament's No. 5 seed all she could handle.

The players battled back and forth in a tightly contested opening set. Knotted 4-4, Knutson was able to get a late break to take the opening frame, 6-4. Larner was convincing in the second set, earning a pair of breaks en route to a 6-2 win which set up a third set.

The players traded breaks to open the decisive set and they were on serve with Knutson leading, 3-2, before Knutson was able to get a key break as she eventually posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win to advance to the Round of 16.

Larner completed her final singles season with an impressive 18-3 mark since the start of the calendar year.

In doubles action later in the day, the fourth-seeded team of Larner and Maddie Lipp also saw their season come to a close in the first round, dropping a nail-biter to the 19th-ranked duo of Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin from NC State, 2-6, 6-3, 12-10.

Trailing 2-1 early in the first set, the Northwestern duo fought off a pair of break points to hold which ignited a string of five straight games won to take the opening set.

In the second set, the pairing from NC State led 3-2 before getting a break as it held on to win the set, 6-3, forcing a decisive third-set superbreaker.

With the teams playing to 10 points and needing to win by two, Larner and Lipp got off to a tough start as Rogers and Wiktorin surged out to a convincing 6-1 lead. However, the Wildcats rallied back to the point where they eventually earned a pair of matches points. However, NC State won the final three points to move on to Friday's Round of 16.

Thursday's action marked the end of the Northwestern careers for Larner and Lipp. The duo had already cemented All-America status in doubles this season based on earning a top-eight seed in the tournament.
