Northwestern Edged by Belmont in Extras

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern and Belmont battled in a back-and-forth contest Friday afternoon, but the Bruins eventually held on for a 6-5 win in 10 innings at Miller Park.
Northwestern drops to 17-31 overall, while Belmont improved to 18-36 on the campaign.
Tommy Bordignon was credited with the loss after pitching 2.2 innings of relief. The senior right-hander fanned three batters. Logan Bowen picked up the win for Belmont, while Kyle Klotz earned the one-inning save.
Hank Christie made his 13th start of the season and went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, and striking out four. Christie earned a no decision in his final outing of the campaign.
Northwestern got on the board in the first inning via a Willie Bourbon sacrifice fly that scored Jack Dunn from third to make it 1-0. The #B1GCats plated their second run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second with another sacrifice fly. This time Leo Kaplan brought Ben Dickey home with a drive to right to put NU in front, 2-0.
Christie kept the Bruins off the board for four innings and retired seven consecutive batters heading into the fifth, but Belmont finally broke through in the frame by scoring four runs.
Belmont's lead did not last long. With two on and two out in the bottom of the fifth, Claeys tied the ballgame with a double to right center that scored a pair and evened the game at 4-4. The double was Claeys' 10th of the season.
Belmont took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth.
The Wildcats came up clutch in the bottom of the ninth thanks to Casey O'Laughlin, who singled up the middle with one away to score Ben Dickey as the tying run.
The Bruins answered in the top of the 10th by scoring the go-ahead, game-winning run and eventually held on for the 6-5 win in extras.
The Wildcats will close out their 2018 season tomorrow when they meet Belmont in the rubber match at noon CT. Northwestern will honor seven seniors with a Senior Day ceremony at 11:40 a.m. CT.
